Study on the Effects of Empowering Social Interaction on Social Behaviors of People with Psychiatric Disability
Kim Moon-Geun

Abstract
The purposes of this study is to test the effect of social interaction experiences on social behaviors of people with psychiatric disabilities(PPD). The major hypotheses were based on the identity theory developed by Stryker. The subjects were 382 PPDs sampled from 8 community mental health centers and 18 social rehabilitation centers in Seoul. The results supports the major hypotheses. First, the more PPDs experienced empowering social interaction in community rehabilitation facilities, the higher were their active role identities. Second, the higher were the active role identities of PPDs, the higher was their participation in social activities in community as well as in rehabilitation facilities. Though discouraged PPDs participation in community activities directly, the empowering interactions of community rehabilitation centers encouraged active social behaviors in community through the mediation of active role identities.
